Random Naomi bits

Naomi never ceases to amaze me, and I'm constantly wondering how I managed to have such an incredibly funny and loving two year old. So onto some random thoughts I want to make sure to remember.

- Last weekend in Philadelphia we were walking through the hotel lobby to go to Erin and Rick's wedding. Uncle Fish asked Naomi to turn around so he could take a picture of her. She was wearing the cutest purple dress and sunglasses. Without a pause, turned half way around, looked over her shoulder at Uncle Fish, and posed. Super glam.
- She loves singing the "I love you" song from Barney, and gives Austin and I the best hugs and kisses when it gets to the part that says, "with a great big hug and a kiss from me to you". Absolutely makes me day when she does this.
- Two days ago at a Philipino restuarant, I was eating pickled salad, and Naomi tried some. She put it back on my plate and said, "too sour".
- The waitress at the same restaurant tickled Naomi when we were leaving. Naomi, not knowing what to call the waitress, proclaimed, "Dinner tickled me!!"
- I was lying on our living room floor when Austin accidently kicked my head. Naomi quickly came over and rubbed my head and told Austin that "kicking mommy is not ok. and Daddy needs a time out".
- Naomi can sing "In the Jungle". It's hilarious.
- She likes to pretend to change her toys (usually Mimi her lambie, and Alvin the chipmunks) diapers. When she pretends to take off their dirty diaper, she yells out, "Ewwww Grosss". She definitely learned that from Austin.

I'm seriously always amazed at how much she picks up each day and how verbal she is. Of course none of you reading this blog will really ever hear her cause she's so incredibly shy and gets so quiet when anyone else is around. Hopefully we'll grow out of it at least a little, as she gets older.

While you were sleeping

I've been so exhausted the past couple of days, sometimes all I want to do is curl up on the sofa and fall asleep. Yesterday while Naomi was finishing up dinner, I went to lie down and immediately passed out. I asked Austin what they did while I napped, and he laughed and showed me this video...Naomi dancing to "Just can't wait to be King" from the Lion King. (yes Austin is training her to be a Disney fanatic) ((and yes, that's me on the sofa fast asleep))

Potty Training Day 2

Day 2 of potty training and we're definitely seeing progress. In the morning, Naomi caught herself before she had to go potty, told me, sat on the potty and finished up. It was exciting to have that happen first thing in the morning. The rest of the morning was spent out at church and then at dim-sum in chinatown, so we used a diaper for the most part. But in the afternoon when we got home, she successfully managed to go #1 and #2 in the potty all before bedtime.
Tomorrow she goes to daycare with a bagful of extra clothes and underwear. Can't wait to see how she does.

Potty Training

Last week, Naomi's teacher asked us to start bringing in big girl underwear for Naomi to school, with lots and lots of extra clothes to change her into in case of accidents. She hadn't actually ever used the potty, but she's been so interested and eager to sit on the potty, that they felt it'd be a good time to try training her. With two of the past students, they had successfully skipped pull-up diapers all together, and transitioned the kids to big kid underwear. It only took a couple of days of accidents before the kids learned to ask to go to the potty before they actually went. This was the method they were going to try with Naomi. Austin and I were hesitant, but figured we'd give it a shot.
We decided to give Naomi a little bit of a headstart but starting her this weekend. So this afternoon at around 2:30, we changed her out of her diapers into her big girl underwear. Her first choice of underwear, minnie mouse, only lasted about 30 minutes before she had an accident. Her second pair, only last about 10 minutes before she had yet another accident. (she HAD just woken up from a nap and finished off over 8oz of milk). By the end of the night, she was on her 6th pair of underwear and didn't really seem to be getting the concept of telling us BEFORE she had to go. I was starting to think maybe it was a little too early for this method. But after dinner, we decided to let her watch a little tv (Toy Story 2) if she agreed to sit on her potty. She actually started to go, but then realized and tried to hold it in. We decided to call it a day after she didn't seem to want to sit down anymore. While getting her bath ready, Austin sat with her while she sat on her upstairs potty for a little bit. Austin decided to try and get her mind off of the actual potty, and started singing "Baby Shark" one of her favorite songs to sing. Before they could even finish one verse, Naomi got extremely quiet and had a serious look on her face. Sure enough she was going pee on the potty. When she was done we were all so excited, but no one was more excited than Naomi who kept jumping up and down shouting, "I DID IT!!!!"
As a reward, we gave her some princess stickers, which she promptly took off and put on her legs...who needs a sticker book anyway. Day 1 of potty training done. Hopefully it'll just get easier from here!!

Dance Class

We enrolled Naomi in a supplemental dance/music class at daycare. Yesterday was her first day. While I wasn’t able to watch the class, Naomi’s teacher’s were raving about how excited and fun Naomi was during the class. She apparently just jumped right in once the music started, and it was like she had been in the class for 6 months, she was even more comfortable than some of the older pre-k kids. No question Naomi loves to dance, but it was nice to hear her teachers confirm this. They said she learned all the dance moves after being shown just once, and was singing along to all the songs.
I’m so excited that Naomi is so musical, and so thankful to have such a great daycare program which has supplemental programs like this music dance class.

Here’s a video, not from Naomi’s dance class, but from our 4th of July bbq, she had a dance off with her friend Alli. They were dancing to “under the sea” from the Little Mermaid.

Two Years Old

Naomi turned two on June 19th. The poor girl was sick on her birthday and didn’t really get to enjoy her party, but she was feeling better in the late afternoon and had a blast opening all her presents.

It’s crazy what a whirlwind couple of months it has been. I’ve been meaning to post so many different times, we’ve had several major events, including Austin and my 5th anniversary, my own first anniversary of my 29th birthday, mother’s day, father’s day, grandparents visiting, aunt’s and uncles visiting, finishing our basement…. Phew. I’m exhausted just thinking of it all!

Anyway, back to Naomi.

At two years of age, she is no longer a baby, and each day I realize that more and more as I watch her interact with everything and everyone around her. She’s growing up. She understands and grasps new concepts every minute, every second practically. She can have full conversations with you, especially if it’s in regards to princesses or elmo. She remembers things she’s done, people she’s met, sometimes even better than I do. Over the weekend we had a 4th of july bbq and two of Naomi’s friends, Alli and Chloe were over. Chloe and Naomi watched parts of Beauty and the Beast together. Yesterday, after I picked Naomi up from daycare, she asked if we were going to go pick up Chloe cause she wanted to watch Beauty and the Beast with her again. And when we got home, she was telling me how she danced with Alli to “under the sea” (yes we watched The Little Mermaid too…we are princess obsessed).
I’ve also realized what a BIG personality Naomi has. Other than when she first meets people, where she’ll be extremely shy, she’s extremely playful, loud, and shall we say dramatic? When she knows you’re watching, she’ll constantly be putting on a show, For example if she wants to show something is funny, she’ll grab her belly and bend over as if she were laughing really hard. Her mouth will hang wide open as she yells out, “HAR HAR HAR”, she may even yell out, “NOMI FUNNY!!” When she walks around, she doesn’t just walk, she struts and bounces. You can hear her coming from a mile away. She has a fake cry down to perfection. She’ll put her head down in her arms, scrunch up her face and say, “boo hoo hoo Nomi crying”. The second she hears music, her little legs and hips start moving. She can’t sit still. It’s like her body becomes possessed and she has to start dancing. Doesn’t matter if we’re at the mall, at home, at a restaurant, even at church.
But with a big personality, you have major extremes. Yes she is quite the ham, I call her my little actress, my diva, Austin calls her a mini-amy. She also a drama queen, oh and did I mention she’s 2? Yes the terrible two’s have hit our household. Anything and everything can set Naomi off. Transitions are particularly challenging. For example if she’s in the middle of playing, and it’s time to eat, she obviously doesn’t want to eat. “No, I don’t want to eat right now! No I don’t” If you insist, she’ll immediately throw her body on the floor, start kicking and screaming, yelling out NO NO NO EATING. She can also get extremely challenging when she doesn’t get what she wants. Of late, she’s been wanting bandaids. Her favorite are the plain brown ones since those are what her teacher gives her at school when she gets a real boo-boo. Since we’ve run out of those, she has been willing to take Ni Hao KaiLan ones, and Hello Kitty bandaids as well. Is it bad that I use them to bribe her? I’ll tell her she can have a bandaid if she gets up and takes a bath…(with water of course, because she’s been telling us she’ll take a bath, but only with no water). Of course if she doesn’t get the bandaid of choice for the night, she’ll kick up a big fuss. Two nights ago, she was sent to bed with heaven forbids, NO BANDAIDs, and two time-outs. I seriously think our neighbors, if they could hear, probably thought we were child abusers. The lungs on that girl…mind you, she’s teeny tiny. She can still fit 12 month clothing. But she can scream louder than most grown-ups with a megaphone.

But even after her worst moments, she always manages to calm down, and monster Naomi disappears, and we get our sweet little girl again. There are times when she’s so sweet, I could almost believe that I imagined the temper tantrum that I had witnessed just 2 minutes ago.

On to her stats from her 2 year checkup.

Weight: 23lbs 8 0z (12%)
Height: 32.5 inches (20%)
Head circumference: forgot the number, but 77%
